Obituary for Sherman D. Weger

Sherman D. Weger, 75, of Palestine, IL, formerly of Robinson, IL, died at 7:15 p.m. on Friday, November 30, 2018 in the comfort of his home surrounded by his family. He was born November 13, 1943 in Lawrenceville, IL, the son of Sherman J. Weger & Paula (Pargin) Weger, both of whom preceded him in death.

He married Cora Franklin on April 21, 1966, and she survives. He is also survived by his daughters, Stefanie & husband Kenneth Hensley (Palestine, IL) and Molly Weger (Robinson, IL); by his grandsons, Tyler Watts (Robinson, IL), Travis Watts (Duncanville, IL), and A.J. Hays (Olney, IL); by his step-grandchildren, Echo “Murph” Hensley (Denim Springs, LA) and Bree Hensley (Chauncey, IL); by his sister, Paula Weger (Flat Rock, IL); by his brothers, Tom & wife Cindy Weger (Robinson, IL) and Bruce Weger (Flat Rock, IL); as well as several nieces and nephews.

Sherman grew up in the Pinkstaff and Flat Rock areas and developed a work ethic on the family farm that would serve him well the rest of his life. He was a 1964 graduate of Robinson High School and worked for Harrison’s Appliance Store until being drafted into the Army. There, he proudly served his country during the Vietnam War as a driver for various personnel. It wasn’t long after his return home that he found work at Texaco, where he was a laborer for 13 years before it shut down. At this point in his life, he took the opportunity to learn a trade, studying at Lincoln Trail he earned an associate degree in refrigeration. Along with working on refrigeration systems, he leased and operated the Flat Rock Marathon Gas Station before getting on with Fair Rite, where he worked until 1991. When he wasn’t busy at work, chances were, he had a fishing pole in his hand. He loved to frequent local ponds and lakes, and this was a great source of joy in his life. Even more so was his family, especially his grandkids and his dog, Baby. A man of faith, Sherman was a member of the Outer West Market Church of Christ and was also a longtime member of the Robinson American Legion Post #69.

Sherman Weger was a generous and loving man who accepted you as you were. His family, community, and country are all the beneficiaries of his selfless dedication. He will not be forgotten.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 5th at the Hutsonville Cemetery, where military services will be conducted by the combined units of the Robinson V.F.W. Post #4549, the Robinson American Legion Post #69, and the Flat Rock American Legion Post #132. Pastor Tim Watson will officiate the service. Memorials may be made to the “Outer West Market Church of Christ”, with envelopes available at the cemetery. The Goodwine Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
