Alma Doloris Hughes, 93, formerly of Palestine, IL, died at 9:17 p.m. on Monday, January 22, 2018 at Porter Hospice Residence in Centennial, CO. She was born June 8, 1924 in Palestine, IL, the daughter of William Henry Ash & Matilda Ellen (Fulk) Ash, both of whom preceded her in death. She married Kenneth Leroy Hughes on July 1, 1943 and he preceded her in death on December 3, 1988. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, William Franklin Ash and Robert Preston Ash; as well as her beloved sister, Eleanor V. Stephens Carmichael, who passed this last July. She is survived by her children, Patricia A. & Roger Stingley (Parker, CO) and Stephen L. & Jeannie Hughes (Anderson, IN); by her grandchildren, Richard & Sheila Hughes (Robinson, IL), Kelli Newlin (Robinson, IL), Jenny & Jon Pianki (Indianapolis, IN), Jason & Renee Good (Muncie, IN), Brent & Joyce Stingley (Indianapolis, IN), Rick & Anna Stingley (Noblesville, IN), and Lindell & Lindsey Albaugh (Hartselle, AL); by her great-grandchildren, Taylor Newlin, Sierra Hughes, Nya Pianki, Mason Good, Myles Good, Spencer Stingley, Elise Stingley, Evan Stingley, Edan Stingley, Emerson Stingley, and Elliana Stingley; by her great-great-grandchildren, Lilly Albaugh and Emma Albaugh; as well as Brenda Brush, who was like a daughter to Alma; and several nieces and nephews. She was a 1942 graduate of Palestine High School. She went to work for the Index Store for a time before moving on to the Bobby Pin Factory and finally to Crawford Electronics. More than anything, she was a dedicated housewife and took that role very seriously throughout her life. For many years she was also a Sunday School teacher and Cub Scout Leader. In her free time, she loved to read Christian novels and to work on word search puzzles. In her younger years, Alma loved working in her yard and growing beautiful flowers among her many pets and birds. She found enjoyment in watching football and basketball games and listening to Christian music. Through the years, she enjoyed keeping in touch with her friends through letters. She was well-known for her alterations and sewing skills. One of her favorite past times was crocheting baby outfits for families in need through an organization with the Pleasant View Church, with whom she was a member for over 70 years. Anyone who knew her could attest to the fact that she lived her faith out on a daily basis, not just on Sundays. Her grandchildren fondly remember her crossing her fingers any time she was trying to hide a surprise and needed to fib about it. That way, the fib “didn’t count”. She was truly a happy, joyful Christian woman who will long be remembered as a loving and caring soul who found the good in everybody. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved her. A time of visitation will be held from 9:00-11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 31st at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Palestine. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home, with burial following in the Pleasant View Cemetery. Celebrant Curt Goodwine will be officiating the service. Memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation or to the Pleasant View Church. Memorial envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
