Barbara (Hardesty) Miller

May 8, 1939 — March 15, 2026

Barbara (Hardesty) Miller, 86, of Palestine, IL, passed away on March 15, 2026, in the comfort of her home, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on May 8, 1939, in Robinson, IL, she was the daughter of Nolan and Birdena (Wilson) Hardesty. Soon after her birth, her family moved to LaMotte Prairie, a place she always remembered as the best place to grow up. It was there, in the simplicity of country life, that so much of who she was began to take shape. She was raised during the war years in a rural farming community, in a home where hard work, resilience, and self-sufficiency were not just admired but expected. Her father was determined to raise a daughter who could stand on her own, and Barb did just that. She was strong-minded, independent, honest, and not easily swayed. In that way, she was a Hardesty through and through.

She graduated from Palestine High School in 1957, but long before then, Larry Miller had already become part of her story. As young people, they grew close, and many figured they would get married. Life, however, took them in different directions. Barbara married Gary Matteson, became a mother, endured the loss of two babies, and faced the challenges of raising two chronically ill children. But out of that difficult season came one of the clearest callings of her life. She became a nurse, and caring for others became one of the defining marks of her 86 years.

Barb lived in the Wheeling area, where she and Gary helped start Kingswood Methodist Church and were active in church life. Later, she returned closer to home and settled near Hutsonville, where she put down roots and continued the work that had become so deeply part of who she was. At Crawford Memorial Hospital, she spent twenty-five years caring for others, offering strength and compassion to patients and families alike before retiring in 1999. It was meaningful work, and she was proud of it. Somewhere in the midst of that season of caring for others, life brought Larry Miller back into her world. What had once belonged to the past slowly became part of her present again, and their story, which had begun in youth, was given a new chapter. They were married on May 23, 1987, and Barbara counted the years that followed as among the happiest of her life.

There was something lively about the way Barbara lived. She enjoyed keeping busy, whether that meant decorating (and re-decorating), daylong shopping sprees, meeting friends for coffee, or heading off on another trip to Florida. She took pride in how she looked, had a distinctive sense of style, and had a spirited presence that was hard to miss. Nowhere was that more obvious than at her grandchildren's games. She was a full-throated presence in the stands, and more than once, it probably felt like ejection was at least on the table. That kind of enthusiasm came from somewhere deeper than a love of competition. Barbara may have enjoyed sports, but what she really loved was watching her grandchildren. She was proud of them, invested in them, and eager to be part of their world.

Near the end of her life, Barb spoke plainly about her regrets. She knew there had been times when her strong will and sharp tongue had strained relationships, and she was sorry for the hurt she had caused. But she also came to know that regret was not the end of her story. Through the kindness of those who walked with her in faith, she was drawn more deeply to Jesus, and in Him she found a greater sense of peace, grace, and wholeness. We find comfort in knowing that what Barb had begun to taste in this life, she now knows completely, at home with her Savior.

She is survived by her children, Mary Beth Smeltzer and David & Carol Matteson; by her grandchildren, Cory & Jamie McDaniel, Kacee McDaniel, and Seth Matteson; by her great-grandchildren, Payton, Makenzie, and Madison McDaniel, and Nolan and Logan McDaniel; by her sister-in-law, Judy Hardesty; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Nolan & Birdena Hardesty; her husband, Larry Miller; and her brother, Raymond Hardesty.
