Betty Jean Carter Landrith

December 6, 1930 — September 20, 2016

Betty Jean Carter Landrith passed away on Tuesday, September 20, 2016, at the Levine Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville, North Carolina after a long battle with Alzheimer's and a recent battle with cancer. Born in Oblong, Illinois on December 6, 1930, she was the only child of Carl & Opal Sempsrote Carter, who preceded her in death. Before moving to Summit Place Assisted Living facility in Mooresville, North Carolina, she had spent most of her lifetime in Palestine, Illinois, as a wife, mother and grandmother. Betty graduated from Palestine High School in 1948 and then attended Terre Haute Commercial College in Terre Haute, Indiana. Upon graduation, she started working as a secretary for Fuller Brock. Her good friend, Loretta Landrith, introduced Betty to her brother, Owen, and they were married on May 14, 1949. He preceded her in death on their 49th wedding anniversary in 1998. For 20 years, she was the part time secretary at the First Christian Church in Palestine where she had been a lifetime member. And for many, she will be remembered as 'Miss Betty' from Tykes and Tots Nursery School which she began in 1971 with Reba Manning. The following year, Jane Goodwine joined them and together they provided many hours of pre-school learning to area children until she retired in 1989. In 2001, Betty donated land to the Palestine Cemetery Association and was recognized for her benevolence by the Chamber of Commerce as their recipient of the 'Humanitarian Award'. She and Owen will fondly be remembered for their love and generosity for family, friends and the community. Betty is survived by two daughters: Karla Ann Tuttle (Huntersville, NC) and Nancy Jo & husband, Darrell 'Ace' Bex (Mooresville, NC); three grandchildren: Nicholas Carter Glyshaw (Phoenix, AZ), Clinton Lee & wife, Judi Bex (Matthews, NC), and Laci Jean & husband Chris Owens (Mooresville, NC); and two great-grandchildren: Owen Lee Bex and Bryson Carter Owens. She is also survived by three sisters-in law: Imogene Crozier (Vero Beach, FL), Dorothy Deupree (Indianapolis, IN), and Nina & husband, Paul Kauffman (Greenwood, IN); by one brother-in-law: Everett English (Momence, IL); and several nieces and nephews. A time of visitation will be held from 1:00-3:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 24th at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Palestine. Funeral services will immediately follow the visitation and will be held at the Palestine First Christian Church, with Pastor Dennis Steckley & Celebrant Curt Goodwine officiating the service. Burial will follow in the Palestine Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Palestine First Christian Church, to the Palestine Public Library or to the Palestine Academic Foundation, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
