Betty Jane Stout, 61, of Hutsonville, IL, passed away on March 16, 2026, at Robinson Rehab & Nursing. Born on December 6, 1964, in Robinson, Jane was the daughter of Floyd Stout & Betty Lou (Davis) Stout, and from the very beginning, she came into the world with a spirit that was impossible to box in.
She grew up in the Robinson area, surrounded by the rhythms of farm life, and it seems that somewhere in those early years she developed the grit, stubbornness, and, yes, wild streak that would mark her for the rest of her days. Jane was no easy woman to define. She was sassy, contrary, unpredictable, and tough as nails. She was the kind of person who kept life interesting, whether you were ready for it or not. She was a wild card, but that was part of what made her so unforgettable. Simply put, there was just no one else quite like Jane.
Life asked a lot of her early. She became a mother at a young age, welcoming her daughter just after turning 17, and from that point on, love and survival had a way of intertwining in her story. Jane knew how to work hard and make do. She cleaned houses for years alongside her mother and sister, and also spent time working in restaurant kitchens. This should come as no surprise to anyone who enjoyed her culinary creations. Jane was a wonderful cook, known for dishes like meatloaf, deviled eggs, and lasagna, but the real magic was that she didn't need much to make something delicious. Jane could take what others might have overlooked and turn it into a meal worth gathering around. In a lot of ways, that was how she lived. She knew how to make something good with what was in front of her.
That same resourcefulness followed her outside. She loved gardening, raising both vegetables and flowers, and she enjoyed mushroom hunting, too. She liked being outdoors, where life felt a little freer, whether that meant sitting around a campfire with family or a friend, going to tractor pulls with her dad, or heading out junking and scrapping metal with him. She had an eye for what could still be useful, what still had value, what might be worth hauling home. It fit her. Jane was not polished or delicate, and she was never pretending to be. She was real, resilient, and a whole lot of fun.
For all her fire and flair, the center of Jane's life was always her people. She loved her family deeply, especially her daughter and granddaughters, and some of her best moments were spent around the people she loved most. Whether gathered around a dinner table, sitting down for a card game, or cheering from the sidelines at her granddaughters’ sporting events and activities, Jane treasured being part of their lives. She showed up, stayed involved, and, whenever she was able, offered whatever help she had to give. Beneath the sass and stubbornness was a woman with a generous heart, one who loved hard and lived fully in her own untamed way, leaving behind a trail of memories that we will never forget.
She is survived by her daughter & son-in-law, Abbygail Gangloff & Gib Manley; her granddaughters, Kaylee Pettigrew and Abryella Bricker; her father, Floyd Stout; her sisters & brother-in-law, Colene & Terry Rice and Elaine Stout; her brother-in-law, Roy York; her nephews, Travis Irvin, Levi York, and Matthew York; her nieces, Brandy Humbers, Heather Cundiff, and Nicole Buchanan; as well as several great-nieces, great-nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her mother, Betty Lou Stout; her brother, Floyd Lynn Stout; and her sister, Tina York.
It was Jane's wish to be cremated without public services. Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson is assisting with the arrangements.
