Carmen Stone, 78, of Palestine, IL, died at 2:45 p.m. on Wednesday, August 30, 2017 in the comfort of her home. She was born November 4, 1938 in Olney, IL the daughter of Paul Alonzo "Sooner" DuFrain & Katherine (Arnold) DuFrain, both of whom preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Royal Preston Stone; and by her son, Royal Clinton Stone. She is survived by her daughter, Lorraine “Lori” Anne (Palestine, IL); by her granddaughter, Katherine Anne Knoblett (Palestine, IL); and by her brother, Edward DuFrain. Carmen grew up in Newton, Illinois, where she attended both elementary school and high school. Her life found her taking on a number of different roles through the years: from secretary, to caretaker, to restaurant owner, to insurance agent. Notably, she worked in a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center while living in Florida, and this provided her with some of the most meaningful years of her life. While these roles were all important to her, they were not nearly as important as the role of mother and grandmother. She loved her daughter and granddaughter with all her heart and was their companion, champion, and friend until the very end. Friends and family alike will remember Carmen as a feisty spirit who lived life her way. She will never and could never be forgotten. A time of visitation will be held from 2:00-4:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 9th at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Palestine. A memorial service will follow and will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home with Pastor Tim Watson officiating the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the "Palestine Public Library", with envelopes available at the funeral home.
