Carroll Verlin Cornwell

Carroll Verlin Cornwell, 81, of Annapolis, IL, passed away at 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at Casey Health Care Center in Casey, IL. He was born August 4, 1935 in Melrose Township, rural Clark County, IL, one of eleven children born to Ross Cornwell & Golda (Clements) Cornwell, both of whom preceded him in death. He married Joan Crabtree in 1957 and she preceded him in death in 1960. He then married Judith Kay Jackson in Palestine, IL on December 22, 1963, and they were married for 53 beautiful years before she preceded him in death on March 28, 2016. He was also preceded in death by his two sons, Carroll Douglas Cornwell in 1960 and Paul Alan Cornwell in 2012; by four sisters, Elizabeth Ann Cornwell (in infancy), Iola Thompson, Barbara Galey, and Eva Dale Heleine; by two brothers, Rex Cornwell and Daniel Cornwell; by five brothers-in-law; a sister-in-law; four nephews; and a great-nephew. He is survived by his children, Stacey Joanne Watson (Robinson, IL), Todd Cornwell & wife Duska (Charleston, IL) and Troy Evan Cornwell (rural Annapolis, IL; by his grandchildren, Kenny Watson & wife Angela (Evansville, IN), Tasha Watson Milam (Robinson, IL), and Jordan Todd Cornwell (Charleston, IL); by two great-grandsons, Jonah Carroll Milam (Robinson, IL) and Jaxon Robert Watson (Evansville, IN); by his great-granddaughter, Grace Marie Benton (Lawrenceville, IL); by three sisters, Esther Drum (West York, IL), Clarabelle Bartram (Marshall, IL), and Clema Stephens (LaPorte, IN); by a brother & sister-in-law, Larry & Beverly Cornwell (West York, IL); by a brother-in-law, Doug Jackson (Palestine, IL); by two sisters-in-law, Opal Cornwell (West York, IL) and Kim Jackson (Concord, NC); as well as several nieces and nephews. Carroll was a journeyman ironworker and a life-long member of Iron Workers Local #439 in Terre Haute, IN. When he wasn’t ironworking, he stayed busy hunting, especially deer and turkey, and was known locally for topping trees and selling firewood. Many will also remember him competing in cross-cut and chainsaw competitions, which he enjoyed doing for years. Carroll was a deacon at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, where he took part in all church-related activities. He was a great fan of the Moonshine Store and the folks who frequent it. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 30th at the Mt. Olive Baptist Church in West York, IL, with Pastors Will Bynum & Art Orndorff officiating. Burial will follow at the Medsker Cemetery. A time of visitation will precede the service and will be held from 1:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m. on Sunday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mt. Olive Baptist Church or to Good Measure International, with envelopes available at the church. The Prust-Hosch Funeral Home in West Union, IL is in charge of arrangements.
