Charles Frederick “Fred” Ferguson, 92, of Flat Rock, IL, died at 9:16 a.m. on Thursday, June 9, 2016 at East Gate Manor in Washington, IN. He was born March 4, 1924 in Montgomery Township, Crawford County, IL the son of William T. Ferguson & Goldia R. Durst, both of whom preceded him in death. Fred married Irene Powlowski on January 31, 1945, and she preceded him in death on December 23, 2009. He was also preceded in death by his brother, John Ferguson; and by two sisters, Zelda Johnson and Shirley Vogel. He is survived by his sister, Wilma Maxwell, (Greenwood, IN); by his sister-in-law, Gertrude (Tillie) Yokstas (Trumbull, CT); by two sons & daughters-in-law, Donald & Julia Ferguson (Spanish Fort, AL) and Charles, Jr., & Louie Ferguson (Flat Rock, IL); by his daughter, Kathleen Schmidt & Andy Miller (Tucson, AZ); by six grandchildren, Dawn, Kara, Curtis, Kelly, Aimee, Jennifer; by five step-grandchildren, Kim, Gretchen, Joel, Dawn, and Chris; by numerous great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Fred proudly served his country as a submariner in the U.S. Navy during WWII. In the Navy, he was trained as an electrician and took his newly-learned trade back home, where he worked as an electrician for many years before retiring in 1986. When he wasn’t working, he could often be found tending to his cows or his dog. Fred was very attuned to nature, and also taught his children and grandchildren how to appreciate the outdoors. He also taught them how to hunt and fish. He was a well-respected man, and was truly part of “the greatest generation”. He was a member of the Flat Rock American Legion Post #132, the Robinson V.F.W. Post #4549, IBEW Local #725, and the St. Elizabeth Catholic Church. A time of visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday, June 13th at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Flat Rock. A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 14th at the St Elizabeth Catholic Church in Robinson. Burial will follow in the Seceder-Maxwell Cemetery, rural Flat Rock. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either the Flat Rock Community Center or to the Crawford County Humane Society, with envelopes available at the funeral home and church.
