Charles William "Bill" Wampler, 85, of Robinson, IL, went home to be with Jesus on December 30, 2023. Bill was born on February 7, 1938, in the quaint town of Birds, IL. As a boy, Bill's childish spirit was reminiscent of Dennis the Menace. His youth was seasoned with mischievous adventures, from knocking down outhouses to unintentionally plunging the town of Flat Rock into darkness! In an attempt to discipline the young man, he was given two choices: go to jail or join the military. He chose the latter, serving proudly as a buck sergeant in the 101st Airborne Division of the US Army stationed in Fort Campbell, KY-a choice that shaped his character and honored his country.
Returning to civilian life, Bill's industrious nature found its calling in the oil fields. He worked diligently as a roustabout and pumper and even established his own oil wells. His entrepreneurial spirit shone through as he ventured into ownership with C W Wampler Glass & Paint from 1987 to 1992. A member of the Lion's Club, Elks, and the American Legion, these endeavors reflected his constant drive for excellence and service in his community. Though his skill behind the wheel left much to be desired, his affinity for antique cars led to his involvement with the Crawford County Collectables Car Club.
A family man at heart, Bill relished in the laughter of board games, especially during Thanksgiving Uno marathons, or in the simple delight of playing Old Maid and Checkers. His presence was a beacon of fun-he could turn a hospital stay into a vault of joy with quarters bouncing off walls and forged countless memories with pitch and catch sessions in his yard. He was the cornerstone of front porch talks, a treasure trove of stories, and a source of constant support for all his loved ones' ambitions. Above all, Bill was the embodiment of love-his bear hugs were a fortress of comfort, his sense of humor was an endless spring of laughter, and his faith was steadfast and firm. Despite life's hurdles, his trust in Jesus was unwavering, as his church family at Highland Church of Christ can attest. He raised his family to know Jesus, and what's more, he embodied his Savior's Holy Spirit by showing them love, joy, kindness, and a type of goodness that only comes from a life lived with God.
So, as we celebrate the wonderful life of Bill Wampler, let us do so with assurance, knowing that he isn't gone, just gone from our sight. See you soon, Bill, and thank you for the memories!
His vibrant life was accompanied by the companionship of his beloved wife of 37 years, Brenda Wampler, and the joy of his five daughters & sons-in-law: Brenda & Mark Osborn, Angelia & Mark Williams, Diana & Gary Miller, Mandy & Don Stewart, and Lisa & Chris Uptmor. The legacy of his warm heart continues with 12 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter eagerly anticipated in May. His memory will be cherished by his devoted sisters & brother-in-law, Jane Erton and Sammy Kay & Terry Weck; his sister-in-law & brother-in-law Shelia & Mark Wakefield; and several nieces and nephews. His life was further brightened by the playful barks of his four-legged friends, JoJo, and Coco, who also survive him. He now reunites in peace with those who preceded him in passing: his previous wife, Phyllis Poorman Wampler; his parents, Samuel & Dorothy Mae Wampler; his brother, John Wampler; and his sisters, Judy Wampler and Garnet "Susie" Wilson.
