Czarina Carter

March 23, 1927 — January 11, 2018

Czarina Carter, 90, of Palestine, IL died at 3:34 p.m. on Thursday, January 11, 2018 at Union Hospital in Terre Haute, IN. She was born on March 23, 1927 in Palestine, IL, the daughter of Clair Newlin & Ruby Finch (Newlin) McCormick both of whom preceded her in death. She married James Mills Carter on October 16, 1948 and he preceded her in death on August 17, 2009. She was also preceded in death by her step-father; Lonnie McCormick; son-in-law, James Garman; as well as her sister-in-law & brother-in-law, Florence & Guy Winger. She is survived by her daughters & sons-in-law, Cathy & Max Correll (Fort Smith, AK) and Marcia Garman (Indianapolis, IN); by her grandsons, Jeff Correll (Tiffany Correll), Marcus Jenkins (Sarah Jenkins), and Matthew Jenkins (Laura Jenkins); as well as 8 great-grandchildren. If you knew Czarina, "Czar" to her friends, then you knew that she liked to smile, be ornery, or just find a reason to laugh. She had a sweet tooth twice her size and many friends and family who would indulge her cravings and take her out to eat. She was a fantastic cook, and her red-velvet cake, banana bread, and chocolate chip cookies were a big request. Czarina crafted afghan blankets when her fingers were nimble, with patterned chevrons of the recipient’s favorite color. She loved to play bingo with her friends, and Crazy Eights, King's Corners, and Gin-Rummy with her grandkids and great-grandkids. Or she just played Solitaire until she wore out a new deck of cards. She was always looking forward to seeing those she cared about, and welcomed new people into her life with wonder. Czarina, with Jim, loved to travel to be close to her family. She was also host to holiday gatherings where her meals were delighted in. Czarina loved and spoiled her cat, Alfie, as equally as she loved and spoiled her family. A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, January 19th at Oak Grove Cemetery with Rev. Loral Tansy officiating the service. In honor of her love of cats, memorials may be made to the Crawford County Humane Society, with memorial envelopes available at the cemetery. The Goodwine Funeral Home in Palestine is in charge of arrangements.
