D. Leroy Smith

D. Leroy Smith, 74, of Oblong, IL, died at 2:23 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at Union Hospital in Terre Haute, IN. He was born September 1, 1942 in Casey Township in Clark County, IL, the son of Duane J. & Ruth Mae (Johnson) Smith, both of whom preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Sharon Throckmartin; by one granddaughter; and two step-sons. He married Elsie McIntosh on November 7, 1988, and she survives. He is also survived by his son & daughter-in-law, Phillip & Lisa Smith (Casey, IL); by two daughters & son-in-law, Dinah & Jason Wimbley (Casey, IL) and Pamela Smith (Terre Haute, IN); by two step-sons & step-daughters-in-law, Larry & Jeanne Garrard (Oblong, IL) and Steve & Connie Ames (Oblong, IL); by five grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; and by one nephew. Leroy spent a good part of his childhood involved in 4-H and was a 1961 graduate of Casey High School. He went on to work as a school bus driver for the Casey School District for 14 years. Following that, he worked construction for 45 years before retiring in 2000. Away from work, Leroy enjoyed spending time in his yard and could often be found on the lawnmower. He served on the West Union Water Board for many years and was a longtime member of the West Union Baptist Church before becoming a member of the Oblong Baptist Church. He will forever be missed by family and friends alike. A time of visitation will be held from 9:00-11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 18th at the Prust-Hosch Funeral Home in West Union, IL. A funeral service will follow and will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday at the funeral home with Pastor Justin Sweitzer officiating. Burial will follow in the Kirk Cemetery, rural Robinson. Memorials may be made to the Oblong First Baptist Church, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
