Darrel Edward Martin, 93, of Robinson, IL, died at 6:05 p.m. Monday, November 26, 2012 at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Evansville Indiana. He was born February 28, 1919 in Robinson, IL, the son of Ross and Georgia Martin. Mr. Martin married Eileen Keeler Martin in 1943 and had two brothers: Lloyd Martin and Paul Martin who preceded him in death. He is survived by his daughter and spouse: Linda Tooley and Tom Tooley. He also leaves behind two grandchildren and spouses, Eric Cardinal and Diane Cardinal of Indianapolis Indiana, Trisha Stuart and Don Stuart of Tucson Arizona, four great grandchildren: Sean Cardinal, Camryn Cardinal, Erin Cardinal, and Jack Martin Cardinal. Darrel served his country in World War II with distinction as a veteran in the First Army and the Third Armored Division as Chief of Gun. He earned several medals including the Bronze Star, Silver Battle Star, and Good Conduct Medal. In his distinguished military career he served in the battles and campaigns of Normandy and Omaha Beach, Northern France, the Ardennes, and the Rhineland and central Germany. Darrel exhibited great pride in his military service recording a detailed video record of his bravery and courage during World War II that is archived in the Library of Congress so that future generations can honor his achievements and service.Darrel also had a long and successful career with the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad starting as a fireman in 1952 and was subsequently promoted to Engineer in 1964 retiring after 25 years in March of 1985. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Thursday, November 29, 2012 at the Goodwine Funeral Home, Robinson. Graveside services will be held after the visitation at the Shiloh Cemetery, rural Jasper County, IL. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family at .
