David Wayne York, a man known for his rugged honesty and spirited character, passed away surrounded by his family on July 22, 2024, in the comfort of his home in Robinson, IL. Born in the Oblong, IL area on September 12, 1961, David's 62 years wove a tapestry of outdoor adventures, treasured family moments, and a robust collection of memories and mementos that reflected his passions.
A true outdoorsman, David's love for coon, rabbit, and squirrel hunting, mushroom gathering, and fishing were the activities that brought him the most joy. He was known to spend countless hours along the Embarrass River or at the pond of his old home, where he and his family enjoyed many fish fries. His collection of wooden mallard ducks and his remarkable relationship with a pet owl were evidence of his deep connection to wildlife. He had a soft spot for animals, often bringing home raccoons and squirrels he found during his hunts.
A man of many hobbies, David cherished his collection of knives and found solace in playing the harmonica. His musical tastes were a reflection of his personality, with a fondness for classic country and the laid-back tunes of Jimmy Buffett. That's not to say he wasn't a thrill-seeker! After all, David drove derby cars and was an integral part of several derbies before a back injury led to many years of disability. Yet, he faced these difficulties with the same tenacity he applied to the rest of his life.
David York was a man who lived unapologetically. He was rough around the edges, a straight shooter who told you how it was. You never knew what might come out of his mouth, especially regarding those he took issue with. Needless to say, his ability to carry a grudge was as strong as his grip on a hunting rifle! That being said, David's hardened exterior often concealed a humorous and funny side, proving that his personality was far more multifaceted and complex than he let on. His unique spirit, like the call of the wild he so often answered, will echo in the hearts and minds of his family and friends forever.
He is survived by his children, Lacey & husband John Malone, Jenny & husband Corey Freels, Daniel York, Austin York, and David M. York; by his grandchildren, Addison Malone, Hunter Malone, Raiden Malone, Xander Freels, Carleigh Freels, Jake Freels, Connor Freels, Grace Freels, Kayson Catt, and Alyvia Wells; by his siblings, Ivan York, Donald York, and Sylvia "Darlene" Grogan; by several nieces and nephews; and by his significant other, Lois Henon. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ivan & Virginia (Kemper) York, and by his brother, Jim York.
A time of visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 25th, at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson. To end the time of visitation, his granddaughter, Carleigh Freels, will sing a special song in memory of her papaw. Memorials may be made to his memorial fund, with checks made payable to "Goodwine Funeral Homes".
Following the visitation, David is to be cremated and his remains privately interred at the Hardinville Cemetery at a later date.
