Donald "Butch" Rees

Donald Louis “Butch” Rees, 75, of Robinson, passed away on May 21st, 2014 at the Carle Hospital in Champaign IL. He was born on June 22nd, 1938, the son of Othmer and Alberta (Fuhs) Rees. He graduated from high school in Jasper, IN in 1956 and earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Texas Wesleyan in 1960. During his time there, he set many basketball records, some of which he still holds. He was elected to their Hall of Fame in 1986. Don served as a teacher and a coach for over 26 years, including time at Alfordsville, IN from 1960-62, Washington Catholic School from 1963-66 until retiring from Hutsonville, IL in 1993. During his time at Washington Catholic, he developed and built Rees baseball field in Washington, IN, which was named in honor of him in 1964. He also helped found the Trophy Room in Robinson, IL in 1972, which has been in business for 42 years. He married Ellen Marie Berger, and she survives of Robinson. He is also survived by his son, Michael Scott Rees of Boonville IN, son Mark Rees and wife Missy of McEwen, TN, daughter Mindy Michelle Krol and husband David of Indianapolis, IN, grandchildren; Mallory Rees and Marissa Rees of Boonville, Stephanie Rees, Shannon Rees, Susan Rees and Mark Rees JR of McEwen TN, and Nora Krol and June Krol of Indianapolis. He is also survived by his sisters, Patricia Burger of Jasper, IN, Rosemary “Rosie” Welp of Huntingburg, IN, and sister in law Cindy Rees of Jasper, IN as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother Jerome “Jerry” Rees. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00am (EST) on Tuesday, May 27th, 2014 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jasper, Indiana, with Father Traylor officiating. Burial will follow at the Fairview Cemetery in Jasper. There will be a time of visitation held on Saturday, May 24th, 2014 at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson from 4:00-8:00pm (CST) and at Saint Joseph’s from 9:00-11:00am (EST) on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Coach Don Rees Memorial Scholarship for Hutsonville, IL students.
