Dorothy Eilene Butcher

Dorothy Eilene Butcher, 85, of rural Robinson, IL, died at 3:15 p.m. on Friday, April 10, 2015 in the comfort of her home. She was born July 2, 1929, in rural Flat Rock to Noel & Alma (Trout) Purcell. On June 28, 1947, she married her childhood sweetheart, Max L. Butcher. A devoted wife and mother, she considered her grandchildren her reward and spent as much time as possible with them. Being a member of South Union Church, she faithfully attended and served in many leadership roles including several years as youth leader. She became a certified lay speaker and spoke numerous times. A woman of many talents; she directed plays, made costumes and puppets, decorated the church, helped in a cake ministry, and a women’s group that made numerous curtains and comforters for Pinehaven Christian Children’s Ranch. Writing poetry was another of her talents, as was painting and crocheting. Her children’s schools and classmates often benefited from her endless willingness to share. It was her great pleasure to drive a school bus for 16 years and serve as a lunch buddy for several years at New Hebron Christian School. She was a member of Eastern Star for over 50 years and attended Flat Rock Grade School, South Union School, and Robinson High School. She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Brice Butcher; and her son-in-law, Gary McKee. She is survived by her husband, Max, and their children: Sherry McKee (Mt. Prospect, IL); Greg & Beth Butcher (Ft. Pierce, FL); Tina & Danny Dennis (rural Robinson, IL), and daughter-in-law, Lori Butcher (rural Flat Rock, IL). She is also survived by her brothers and sister, Charles & Marilyn Purcell (Scottsdale, AZ), Ray Purcell (Athens, AL), and Patty Fitts (Flat Rock, IL); her grandchildren, Patrick McKee, Jericho Dennis, Miranda Smothers, Colleen Hankins, Joshua Butcher, Mariah Butcher, and Levi Butcher; her great-grandchildren, Parker and Paxton Connelly-McKee, Kellan, Rowyn, and Storey Dennis, Brice David Butcher, and Ezra Hankins; as well as several nieces and nephews. A time of visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 14th at South Union Church (3993 N. 1250th St. Flat Rock, IL). Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 15th at South Union Church, with Ron Price officiating the service. Burial will follow in Tohill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to South Union Church or to Good Samaritan Hospice, with envelopes available at the church. The Goodwine Funeral Home in Flat Rock is in charge of arrangements.
