Douglas Neal Gurley, 65, of rural Robinson, IL, died at 9:00 p.m. (EST) on Saturday, July 8, 2017 at Regional Hospital in Terre Haute, IN, following complications from lymphoma cancer. He was born April 29, 1952 in Sullivan, IN the son of Morris Lee Gurley & Ada F. (Neal) Gurley, both of whom preceded him in death. He married Ruth A. Briggs on March 4, 1972, and she survives. He is also survived by his daughter & son-in-law, Sarah K. & Kody Maus (Oblong, IL); by his 2 ½ week-old grandson, Neal Don Maus; by his brothers & sisters-in-law, Jeff & Suzanne Gurley (Robinson, IL) and Kevin & Ronda Gurley (Effingham, IL); by his sisters & brothers-in-law, Mary Lynn & Oneal Basham (Round Hill, KY) and Jan & Chuck Maffioli (Terre Haute, IN); as well as several nieces and nephews. Doug grew up in the Trimble area before graduating from Robinson High School in 1970. He went on to work various jobs over the years. He was a farm hand, a custodian for Robinson High School, worked for Marathon in the oil fields, and worked his way up to coal yard operator at the Hutsonville Power Plant, where he retired. When he wasn’t working, Doug could usually be found going to tractor pulls, woodworking, or gardening. He enjoyed traveling with his family, and made many memories with them in the western United States, Hawaii, and Caribbean. He was an active member of the Porterville Congregational Christian Church, where he served as trustee and deacon. He recently became a grandpa, and few things brought him as much joy as spending time with his new grandson. Doug was a tender, compassionate, hard-working Christian man that loved his family. He was a friend to all he met. He will be missed by many but will remain in the hearts of those that knew truly knew him. A time of visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on July 13th at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on July 14th at the funeral home, with burial following in the Newlin Cemetery. Rev. Jerry McDaniel and Doug’s good friend Terry Pickett will officiate the services. Memorials may be made to the West End Chapel Children’s Ministries or to the Porterville Congregational Christian Church, with memorial envelopes available at the funeral home.
