Edward "Ed" Carpenter

June 17, 1942 — March 10, 2017

Ed Carpenter, 74, of Flat Rock, IL, died at 5:50 p.m. (EST) on Friday, March 10, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, IN. He was born June 17, 1942 in Wewoka, OK, the son of Arch & Pearl (Taylor) Carpenter. He married Sarah Goodwin on June 26, 1976 and she survives. He is also survived by his children, Abby Carpenter & Greg Greer (Boone, NC), Molly & Todd Grimm (Sellersburg, IN), Matthew Carpenter (New Albany, IN), Laura & Kyle York (Flat Rock, IL), and Heather & Tim Wampler (Flat Rock, IL); by his three grandchildren, Wren York, Andy Grimm, and Ellie Grimm; by his sister, Ann Martin (The Villages, FL); as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother, John Carpenter. Ed was a 1960 graduate of Robinson High School. He went on to proudly serve his country in the U.S. Navy as a flight engineer, and worked on numerous planes over the course of his service. Following his honorable discharge, he took his knowledge of airplane mechanics and applied it to his work with Delta and PSA. After a number of years working in the airline industry, he became an ironworker and was a longtime member of Local #439 in Terre Haute. He was also a member of the Flat Rock Masonic Lodge #348, and was a committed Shriner. He was a devoted public figure, having served as president of the Robinson CUSD#2 Board of Education. He was also Montgomery Township Road Commissioner for 16 years. When Ed agreed to do something, he was all-in. It was this mindset that drove him to success in everything he did. Friends and family alike will remember a man who was never afraid to try anything. A time of visitation will be held from 4:00 -7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 16th at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Palestine. A private memorial service will follow at a later date. Memorials may be made to Shriner’s Hospitals for Children, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
