Euretta Jane Cover

Jan 8, 1941 — Nov 2, 2026

Euretta "Jane" Cover, 85, of Hutsonville, IL, passed away on Monday, November 2, 2026, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, IN.

She was born on January 8, 1941, in Sullivan, IN, to Jacob Harold Pirtle and Daisy (Brodie) Pirtle, and graduated from Sullivan High School in 1959. She moved to this area in the mid-1960s and devoted much of her life to making a home and raising her children. Jane was a hard worker, and once her children were out of the house, she put those same skills to work in home health care. She cleaned, cooked, baked, and helped people with the everyday things that had become difficult. Along the way, she grew close to the people she cared for. She loved the work, and they were the reason.

That care reached well beyond the homes where she worked. Around Christmas, Jane baked treats and delivered them around town to banks and doctors' offices. Her son-in-law's workplace received cookies, too. She enjoyed cooking and baking, especially when there was someone to share it with, and her crocheting followed much the same pattern. Jane made baby blankets to give away and took items to the hospital for the babies. She liked having something to give.

For all the people she thought about, Jane was a homebody. She enjoyed working jigsaw puzzles and spending time outside with her flowers. She loved animals, especially the many beloved cats she had over the years. Her faith had a place in her everyday life, too. She attended New Hebron Christian Church, and the care she showed others gave a practical expression to that faith. Cooking a meal, helping in someone's home, or making something to give away were simple ways to love her neighbor, and Jane found plenty of opportunities. She kept herself looking put together, liked things the way she liked them, and was always early. Jane had her own way of doing things, and the people who knew her knew that well.

They also knew how giving she was. A meal prepared in someone else's kitchen, cookies delivered at Christmas, a blanket made for a baby: Jane put time and work into caring for people. Those everyday gifts meant something because of the woman behind them. She made sure people had something homemade, and with it, the knowledge that she'd thought of them.

Jane is survived by her son, Brad McMahan (Sullivan, IN); her daughter, Karen (Butch) Nessly (Robinson, IL); grandchildren, Breanna McMahan (Brazil, IN), Alex Baker (Fort Worth, TX), Ryan (Violet) Baker (Hutsonville, IL), RC Nessly (Maryville, TN), and Theo (Ashlyn) Nessly (Indianapolis, IN); five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; her brother, Eddie Pirtle (Murchison, TX); two nephews; and several cousins.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Bret McMahan; and her sister-in-law, Carolyn Pirtle.
