Gerald Dewayne Shaffner

Gerald Dewayne Shaffner, 69, of West Union died on Monday, February 13, 2012 at his residence. He was born March 28, 1942 in West Union, the son of Oscar Shaffner and Anna Jean McCullom Shaffner. He was a structural ironworker, but his passion was the outdoors. An avid bow hunter, Gerald traveled 17 states giving seminars on hunting big, mature white tail bucks using bow and arrow. He was also very passionate about watching his grandchildren participate in sporting events. He was an active member of the West Union First Baptist Church, where he served as an assistant songleader for several years.Gerald married Sharon Coryell on November 24, 1963 and she survives. He is also survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law, Brian & Pattie Shaffner and Lance & Heather Shaffner, (all of Marshall); his grandchildren, Savannah, Macy, Madison, Maddie, Spencer, and Jacob Shaffner, (all of Marshall); his sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn & Jim Collier (West Union); four brothers and their spouses, Stan Shaffner, Ken & Julene Shaffner, and Myron & Betty Shaffner (all of West Union) and Elden & Janet Shaffner (Makanda, IL); his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Janice & Rick Duzan and Gene Cline (all of Marshall); as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 16th at the West Union First Baptist Church, with Pastor Richard Barnett to officiate the service. Burial will be in the Medsker Cemetery, Melrose Township, IL. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 15th at the Prust-Hosch Funeral Home in West Union, as well as from 8:00 a.m. until service time at 10:00 a.m. at the church on Thursday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made to the West Union Baptist Church, the Carmi Children€™s Home, or to the West Union Public Library, with envelopes available both at the funeral home and the church.
