Harold Meeks

Harold Meeks, 83, of Robinson, IL, died at 4:35 p.m. on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at the Magnolia Center in Robinson. He was born July 15, 1931 in Robinson, the only child of Carl Meeks & Eathel Wesner Meeks. A gifted athlete, Harold was especially drawn to basketball. “Lefty” (a nickname he earned for shooting left-handed) was a key player in high school when Robinson played in the state tournament. For many years, he officiated high school basketball games as an IHSA official. As he grew older, his love for high school sports never waned and he was an avid supporter of Robinson High School athletics until the very end. A veteran, Harold served his country in the U.S. Army during Korea as a mechanic in the 539th Transportation Company. Back stateside, he was a boilermaker, and retired after 24 years of work. He spent much of his retirement as a professional commercial painter. Harold was an avid outdoorsman who spent quite a bit of time on his farm, where he fished, hunted, gardened, split wood, and where he had 22 bluebird houses. He was a faithful member of the Highland Avenue Baptist Church for many years, and was also a member of the Democratic Party. He married Phyllis Weger on December 25, 1952, and she survives. He is also survived by his two sons & daughters-in-law, Ron & Lissa Meeks (Saint Charles, MO) and Von & Kelly Meeks (Robinson, IL); and his beloved grandchildren, Lydia Meeks, Kasey Meeks, and Jason Meeks. He was preceded in death by his parents. A time of visitation will be held from 5:00-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 27th at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 28th at the funeral home with Pastors Jerry McDaniel and Dwight McDaniel officiating the service. Burial will follow at the Tohill Cemetery in rural Flat Rock. Memorials may be made to the Robinson Athletic Booster Club, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
