Harriet Higgins

Harriet Higgins, 93, of Palestine, IL, died at 7:15 a.m. on Tuesday, August 18, 2015 at the Magnolia Center in Robinson, IL. She was born March 29, 1922 in Hutsonville, IL the daughter of Don Houpt & Ruth Moorhead Houpt, both of whom preceded her in death. Harriet married James W. Higgins on September 26, 1948, and he preceded her in death on June 28, 2011. She was also preceded in death by her brother, James Houpt; and by her sister, Janette Devlin. She is survived by her two daughters & sons-in-law, Jane & Bob Walker (rural Palestine, IL) and Amy & Doug McFarland (Brownsburg, IN); 6 grandchildren, Robb & Kelly Walker (rural Palestine, IL), Dr. Kate & Jeff Papp (Plainfield, IL), Michael & Kristen Walker (rural Palestine, IL), Cameron McFarland (Brownsburg, IN), Isabel McFarland (Brownsburg, IN) and Paige McFarland (Brownsburg, IN); four great-grandchildren, Zayne Walker, Emery Walker, Will Papp, and Harrison Papp; her brother, Donald & JoAnn Houpt (John’s Island, FL). Harriet worked in the office for Marathon Oil Company for a time before becoming a homemaker. In her free time, she enjoyed playing cards, and belonged to many card clubs. She also enjoyed sewing, and sewed many outfits for her daughters over the years. After Jim retired, they enjoyed many cruises to road trips together, and made many happy memories later on in life. She will be remembered for her love of reading and for the love and care she gave to her grandchildren. A time of visitation will be held from 10:00-11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 22nd at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Palestine. Funeral services will follow the visitation and will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Oak Grove Cemetery Association or to the Palestine Public Library, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
