Irma D. (Carter) Barrett passed away peacefully on May 12, 2023, at Ridgeview Care Center in Oblong, IL, just a few days shy of her 90th birthday. Born in Lawrenceville, IL, on May 17, 1933, Irma was a faith-filled, loving, and passionate woman who touched the lives of all those who had the pleasure of knowing her. She leaves behind a loving family, including her son & daughter-in-law, Doug & Donna Barrett; her grandchildren, Glyn & Amie Draper, Cam & Tami Barrett, Hillary Barrett, Cassie Barrett, Stacey Atteberry, Kim Lorance, Brad Atteberry, and Paul & Cortney Quick; her great-grandchildren, Bailey, Zach, Clayton, Dawn, Jordan, Nickolai, Kaitlyn, Dawson, Jaden, Ivy, Nathan, Kenneth, Zander, Nakiyah, and Liam; and three great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews who will cherish her memory.
Irma was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar & Jessie (Taylor) Carter; her husband of 65 years, Maurice Barrett; her father-in-law & mother-in-law, Charles & Hattie Barrett; her son, Gregory Allen Barrett (in infancy); her granddaughter, Lorie Barrett; and her brothers & sisters-in-law, Billy & Elizabeth Carter, Earnest & Francis Carter, Troyd & John Ann Carter, Cloyd & Ruth Carter, and Taylor Carter.
Though Irma worked for various area businesses, her primary responsibility and the joy of her life was tending to her house and all those who called it "home". Irma's other interests were diverse and brought joy to her and those around her. She enjoyed traveling with her brother & sister-in-law, Bill & Elizabeth, and together, they took the opportunity to visit all but two states in this great land of ours. An avid reader, Irma spent not a small amount of her free time immersed in a good book, and she was known to work word search puzzles on a daily basis.
Irma also took delight in birdwatching, and her eyes lit up whenever she saw cardinals in her yard. That being said, mere birds could not hold a candle to her precious and beloved family. She was a devoted wife and a loving mother and couldn't help but dote on her grandchildren, who were, by all accounts, her pride and joy. They will all fondly remember her incredible cooking, as well as the way she'd yell at the contestants on game shows as if they could actually hear her. It goes without saying that "Hurricane Irma" had a personality as bold and as fierce as her nickname suggests! Though you didn't (ever) want to cross her, she exuded compassion, understanding, and love, traits that she shared with her Savior.
Irma was a woman of deep faith, which she expressed through her worship at the First Missionary Baptist Church in Flat Rock. It was this faith that sustained her through the many challenges that life brought her way. It's no wonder that she expressed time and again that her ultimate desire would be for her family to turn to Jesus. She held on to the hope that one day, she could be reunited with all of those she loved in Heaven, that perfect place where death, sorrow, and pain are no more. Though we grieve, we do so with hope and with the lasting gift of memory. We will continue to find comfort in the life she lived, a life that, by the grace of God, will never end!
A time of visitation will be held from 12:00-2:00 p.m. on what would have been her 90th birthday (Wednesday, May 17th) at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson. Funeral services will immediately follow and be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home, with Celebrant Curt Goodwine officiating. Burial will be in the Jones Cemetery.
