James "Bud" Brackett

September 8, 1925 — December 5, 2017

James “Bud” Brackett, 92, of Robinson, IL, died at 7:35 a.m. on Tuesday, December 5, 2017 in the comfort of his home. He was born September 8, 1925 in Robinson, IL, the son of Harry Brackett & Lillian (Peterman) Brackett, both of whom preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Susie Brackett; by his sister, Jean Everingham; and by his brother, Bobby D. Brackett. He married Helen Highsmith on June 28, 1948, and they were married for almost 70 happy years. She survives. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Harvey Everingham; by his several nieces and nephews; as well as his special, almost family friends, the Joe James Family and Tami Steele, and her son David and daughter Susie. Bud was a Robinson High School graduate, where he played football and was the recipient of the All-State Guard Award. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II on the destroyer DD Calhoun. His ship had rescued several downed pilots and survivors of the USS Bush off Okinawa, when his ship, (the Calhoun), was sunk after being hit by six Japanese Corsair and Hellcat suicide planes. He was a lifetime member of the Robinson American Legion Post #69 and V.F.W. Post #4549. Back home, Bud went to work as a sub foreman in the machine shop at Marathon Oil Company, where he worked for over 30 years before retiring in 1982. After retirement, he enjoyed spending his winter time in their condo in Kure Beach, NC, with the ocean in the front and the Cape Fear River in the back; it was a fisherman’s paradise. He and Helen also enjoyed traveling, and visited many islands and countries throughout their many years together. A time of visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. on Friday, December 8th at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson. Funeral services will immediately follow and will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home, with burial following in the Robinson New Cemetery. Judy Williams will officiate the services. In honor of Bud’s love of animals, memorials may be made to the Crawford County Humane Society, or the Crawford County Spay and Neuter Foundation. Monetary donations may also be made to the Otterbein United Methodist Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
