Jerry Wayne Smith

Jerry Wayne Smith, 71, of Jarrell, Texas, formerly of Flat Rock, Illinois, went to be with Jesus on Sunday, June 5, 2016 at the Hermann Memorial Hospital in Houston, Texas after an extended illness. Jerry was born on March 28, 1945 at the family home to Noble & Wilma Smith. Jerry married his wife of 50 years, Bonnie Thomlinson in July 1965, and she survives. He is also survived by their two daughters, Sherri Shoulders (Flat Rock, IL) and Leslie Bailey (Jarrell, TX) and son-in-law (and partner in turning wrenches), David 'Beetle' Bailey (Jarrell, TX); seven grandchildren, Shawna Vaughn, Shelby Shoulders, Dalton Shoulders (all of Flat Rock, IL), Tia Meronek (Copperas Cove, TX), Derek Bailey, Shyanne Bailey, and Darren Bailey (all of Jarrell, TX); four great-grandchildren, Maddux Roberts, Paxton Metz (both of Flat Rock, IL), Levi Meronek and Lane Meronek (both of Copperas Cove, TX); and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; by his sister, Brenda Weger; by his son-in-law, Steve Shoulders; as well as one grandson and five great-grandchildren. Jerry was a 1963 graduate of Robinson High School, and went on to find his calling as a mechanic. Away from work, he enjoyed spending time with his family, teaching, and touring the country side in the Model A Fords and B-Model Macks that he spent his life collecting and repairing. He was a member of The Grace United Methodist Church of Palestine, Illinois. A time of visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 14th at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Palestine. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 15th at the funeral home, with burial following in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery. Jane Drake will officiate the service.
