Judie A. McCarter, 76, of Palestine, IL, died May 28, 2021, at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, IL. She was born October 18, 1944, in Daniel Boone, KY, the daughter of James & Ora (Dunning) Parker. She married Raymond L. Hall on April 1, 1972, and he preceded her in death on January 26, 1986. She then married George McCarter on February 23, 1990, and he preceded her in death on January 1, 2011. She was also preceded in death by her siblings, Norris, Maxine, and Mary; and by her step-daughter, Mary Margaret. She is survived by her daughter & son-in-law, Leslie & Rob Stark (Palestine, IL); by her step-daughter & son-in-law, Johanna & Richard McCarty (Hillsboro, IL); by her son-in-law, Rodney Herrick; by her grandchildren, Asia & Tyler Finney and Dalton & Nikki York; by her step-grandchildren, Tracy & Nate Brunnabend, JR Stark, and Tommy & Kacey Stark; by three great-grandchildren and nine step-great-grandchildren; by her brother, Leon Parker; by her two sisters, Betty Mills and Janet & Lee Brown; as well as several nieces and nephews. Judie grew up in rural Lawrence County and attended school in Lawrenceville before entering the workforce. Throughout her career, she proved to be a very capable and incredibly dependable employee at Ettelbrick Shoe Factory, L.S. Heath & Sons, and eventually, Victor Dana, where she finally retired in October of 2006. Anyone who knew her could attest to her work ethic, which was simply second-to-none. She did everything with a sense of purpose, and the result was excellence. This was evident not only in her professional life but in her personal life as well. She was vital in starting the Palestine Eagles Women's Auxiliary, with whom she was a charter member. Judie poured herself into other local organizations as well, including the Crawford County Civil Defense group and the Palestine Chamber of Commerce. Her involvement with the Chamber led her to volunteer to help put on the Pioneer City Rodeo, sparking in her a passion for the sport that she would hold for the rest of her life. In fact, she and her second husband, George, took innumerable trips to Las Vegas to watch the National Finals, and this was a great source of joy in her life, as was traveling in general. In short, it didn't matter if she was going to Moonshine or the Grand Canyon, so long as she was going somewhere! More than any of this, Judie will be remembered for the love she so lavishly poured on others. She was generous, often to a fault, but the personal price was always worth the cost. Her family was the primary beneficiary of her love, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought her a newfound light and sense of purpose in the twilight years of her life. Those of us blessed to know her will remember an ornery-but-loving soul who taught us that life is what you make it. We are thankful that Judie's 76 years were filled with real and genuine living. A time of visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 3rd at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Palestine.
