Kathleen “Katy” South, 90, of Palestine, IL died at 3:50 a.m. on April 1, 2014 at the Ridgeview Care Center in Oblong, IL. She was born February 3, 1924 in Kansas City, KS, the daughter of Hershel O’Brien & Dorothy Waller O’Brien. She worked at Victor Dana for a number of years as a bundler. She was a member of Outer West Market Church of Christ for over 20 years. She was the manager of the Palestine Food Pantry for several years, and was awarded the Senior Citizen of the Year by the Palestine Chamber of Commerce in 2006. Katy was preceded in death by her first husband, Herman Warren Nethery in 1972. She then married Wilbur “Web” South, and he preceded her in death in 1994. She was also preceded in death by her parents; her step-mother, Elsie O’Brien; her grandson, Donald W. Nethery II; her sister, Betty O’Brien; and her brother, Larry O’Brien. She is survived by her children, Melba Kay Clark (Palestine), Don & Sandra Nethery (Palestine), Carolyn Parr (Palestine); four grandchildren, Lisa Clark (Palestine), Faron Clark (Clinton, IN), Michael Ham (Palestine), and Melinda Carpenter (Norman, OK); 12 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Peggy Smith (Fort Worth, TX); her brothers, Jerry O’Brien (Fort Worth, TX) and Gerry O’Brien (Fort Worth, TX); as well as several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 4th at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Palestine. Burial will follow in the Palestine Cemetery. A time of visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 3rd at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Palestine Food Pantry, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
