Kenneth "Kenny" Smith, 67, of Robinson, IL, passed away unexpectedly at his home on January 9, 2024. Born on April 30, 1956, in Vincennes, IN, Kenny was a hardworking and spirited individual who lived a life marked by passion and fierce independence. He grew up in Robinson and developed a reputation as a dedicated worker early on. A 1975 graduate of Robinson High School, he began his long-held career washing and detailing cars that same year. His work at the Pottery, until its closing in 1999, was just the beginning of his notable work ethic. Kenny was more than proficient at his craft; he was exceptional. At one point, he meticulously cleaned an average of 40 cars a month! Even when his physical condition began to deteriorate, Kenny's determination never waned. Working with a walker, he continued to outpace many, demonstrating that his love for his work was unwavering, his standards unyielding, and his hands never idle.
Kenny's work was not just a job; it was a testament to his character. Known for being hardheaded and stubborn, he approached work with the same tenacity he approached life. If Kenny started washing cars at midnight or worked longer hours than his peers, it was because he believed in the value of hard work. His cars were not just clean-they were "Kenny Smith clean." His commitment to excellence, his depth of experience, and his unwavering resolve made Kenny sought after for many years.
Though his work consumed much of his time, Kenny had a few select hobbies that brought him joy. Stock car racing was a passion he not only observed but participated in, as he enjoyed the thrill of the race behind the wheel for several years. A NASCAR fan at heart, his love for the roar of the engines extended to his personal life, where he rode his Harley, enjoying the freedom of the open road.
Kenny's approach to relationships was much like the rest of his life-uncomplicated and straightforward. You knew where you stood with him, as he was a man who either liked you or he didn't. His candid nature was as much a part of his charm as it was a hallmark of his honest and upfront demeanor.
Kenny Smith's journey through life was one that was uniquely his own. He was a man who lived authentically, worked tirelessly, and left this world with the same quiet dignity with which he conducted his life. His memory will be cherished and kept alive in the stories shared by those who knew him best: his brother & sister-in-law, Charlie & Becky Smith, his good friend, Gene Beard III, as well as several nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald P. & Gladys (Weger) Smith; by his brother, Donnie W. Smith; and by his sister, Linda Brock.
A time of visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 11th, at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson.
