Lloyd Gene Hall, Sr., known by many as "Woody," passed away on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at his home in Robinson, IL. He was born on January 10, 1947, in Hutsonville, and the family moved to Palestine before his first birthday. Palestine was where he grew up, and Palestine was where he stayed long enough to know just about everyone in town.
He graduated from Palestine High School in 1965 and went straight to work. There was a stretch at the Ettelbrick Shoe Factory, then time with the Village of Palestine, then a job at the pallet factory. Then, in 1977, he came back to the high school as the janitor, and there he stayed for the next twenty-six years. Twenty-six years in the same hallways will teach a person a few things. Lloyd liked to say that George Jones song, "These Old Eyes Have Seen It All," summed up his time at the school pretty well. He retired in 2003 with all of it tucked away.
Long before he retired, back in 1968, he had picked up a CB radio and chosen the handle that would follow him the rest of his life. "Woody" went out over the airwaves and reached, by his count, about 150 people scattered across the country and as far away as Europe. He set the radio aside for twenty years somewhere in the middle, but when he retired and moved to Robinson, the CB came back out, and so did "Woody." There were old friends to find again and new ones to meet, and he had the time now to do it right.
Woody had always known how to fill his own time. Long before retirement, he'd run beagles after rabbits, and he'd loved riding Harleys for years, eventually settling on a trike he could trailer down to Florida or Texas to ride for as long as he wanted. Retirement just gave him the time to do more of it. Thursday nights pulled him to dances in Terre Haute, and the Moose Lodge in Vincennes had his Saturdays. He was a member there, and a karaoke regular, and country music was what came out of him when the mic came around. He didn't sing to perform. He sang because the songs said what he wanted to say.
Put it all together, and you had a man who lived out loud. The CB crackling in the back room, the Harley rumbling out of the driveway, the country song coming up next at karaoke night. Lloyd spent seventy-nine years making noise in the best sense of the word, and the world he leaves is a quieter place than he found it.
He is survived by his children, Tammy Shipman, Lois & Butch Anglemyer, Lloyd "Gene" Hall, Jr., Stephanie Hall & Mike Lambert, and Lisa & Quentin Campbell; by 12 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren; by his sister, Emma Louise Riley; and by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred "Ray" Hall and Ruby Lois (Adams) Hall; by his sister, Jo Ann Watts; by three brothers, Thurman Hall, Raymond Hall, and Jack Hall; and by his best friend, Janet Pankonien.
A time of visitation will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 12th, at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Palestine. A funeral service will immediately follow at 4:00 p.m., with Celebrant Curt Goodwine officiating. During the service, family and friends will have the opportunity to speak to the fullness of Lloyd’s life. Cremation will follow, and his remains will be buried in the Palestine Cemetery at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Crawford County Humane Society, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
