Maurice Barrett, 90, of rural Flat Rock, IL, died at 11:20 pm on Wednesday, November 15, 2017 in the comfort of his home. He was born July 26, 1927 in Robinson, IL, the son of Charles H. Barrett & Hattie E. (Euwing) Barrett, both of whom preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Oscar & Jessie Carter; by his son, Gregory Allen Barrett in infancy; as well as his granddaughter, Lorie Barrett. He married Irma D. Carter on June 1, 1952, and she survives. He is also survived by his son & daughter-in-law, Doug & Donna Barrett; by his grandchildren, Glyn & Amie Draper, Cam & Tami Barrett, Hillary Barrett, Cassie Barrett, Stacey Atteberry, Kim Lorance, Brad Atteberry, and Paul & Cortney Quick; by his great-grandchildren, Bailey Draper, Zach Draper, Clayton Barrett, Dawn Tracy, Jordan Tracy, Nickolai Tracy, Kaitlyn Temples, Dawson Temples, Jaden Scott, Ivy Marksbury, Nathan Quick, Kenneth Quick, Zander Atteberry, and Nakiyah Atteberry; and by his great-great-grandchildren, Cameron Comforti and Izabelle Tracy. Maurice was a 1945 graduate of Robinson High School. He went on to serve his country in the U.S. Army from November 1, 1945 to November 22, 1946. Back home, he went to work for the Pottery for 4 years before going to work for the forestry crew at CIPS, where he was employed for 37 years before retiring in 1984. Never one to let dust settle, he still kept busy in his retirement, working for the Robinson Daily News for 16 years. When he wasn’t at work, he could always be found washing and waxing his car (or anyone’s dirty car parked in his driveway). Drivers by would often see him push-mowing his front yard, which was no small feat. Anyone who knew him could attest to the fact that he was, by all accounts, a people-person, and never had a harsh word to say about anyone. While he loved his friends, his family was his pride and joy, and they will forever miss this one-of-a-kind, caring soul. He was a member of the IBEW 702 Union and the First Missionary Baptist Church in Flat Rock. A time of visitation will be held from 3:00-6:00 p.m. on Monday, November 20th at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 21st at the funeral home, with burial following at the Jones Cemetery, rural Flat Rock. Celebrant Curt Goodwine will officiate services. Memorials may be made to the Oblong Christian Children’s Home or to the Robinson V.F.W. Transportation Fund, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
