Mildred Marie Correll

March 10, 1918 — August 14, 2017

Mildred Marie Correll, 99, formerly of rural Robinson, IL and Palestine, IL, died peacefully on Monday, August 14, 2017 at Brookdale Castleton in Indianapolis, IN. She was born March 10, 1918 in Sumner, Illinois, married Leonard Correll on October 30, 1945, and together they had three children, eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Bessie (Higgins) Holsen; her husband, Leonard Correll on February 14, 1999; her brother and sister-in-law, Melvin and Geraldine Holsen; and her sister-in-law, Donna Rae Holsen. She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Merle and Trudy Holsen of Lakeland, FL; her daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and John Cash of Madison, WI; her daughter and son-in-law, Marlene and Bob Jamieson of Indianapolis, IN; her son and daughter-in-law, Lindell and Susanne Correll of Gainesville, FL; eight grandchildren, Tom Cash, Todd (Regina) Cash, Kevin Cash, Paul Cash, Mike (Rachel) Jamieson, Jennifer (Jonathan) Christian, Antonia (Ryan) Girard, and Annika (Todd) Davis; six great-grandchildren, Sierra Cash, Knight Cash, Leif Cash, Roman Christian, Donovan Christian, and Oliver Jamieson; and a niece, Susan (Tony) Moffitt of Polk City, FL. Mildred attended Lancaster High School for three years before graduating from Sumner High School. Upon graduation, she worked at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Porter in Lawrenceville, IL before attending Sanford Brown Business College in St. Louis. During World War II, she returned to Lawrenceville, working as a secretary at George Field. In 1945, she married the love of her life, Leonard Correll, at the Fort Sill Army Base in Oklahoma, and about a year later they returned to Illinois. Mildred spent most of her married life as a homemaker on their farm north of Robinson and the couple shared a loving 53 years of marriage together. She was a 4-H leader for a number of years, and enjoyed cooking, gardening, and creating beautiful quilts. When they retired, they moved away from the farm to a house in Palestine. After Leonard’s death, Mildred sold her home in Palestine and moved to Springfield to be near her daughter Carolyn and her family, and then later to Indianapolis to be near her daughter Marlene and her family. For many years, Mildred was an active member of the Grand Prairie Christian Church, and then attended services at Westside Christian Church in Springfield for seven years. For the last ten years of her life, Mildred lived in an apartment at Brookdale Castleton, an independent living facility in Indianapolis, and regularly attended the Brookdale Fellowship services sponsored by the Trinity Wesleyan Church. She enjoyed her time there, making many new friends among both the residents and staff. Mildred was a wonderful lady who lived a truly Christian life, treating everyone she met with kindness and respect. Her body eventually gave out, but her mind remained sharp and she never lost her sense of humor. She will long be remembered as a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She will never be forgotten. A time of visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 20th at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Palestine. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, August 21st at the funeral home, with burial following in Oak Grove Cemetery. Bro. Joe Griffith will officiate. Memorials may be made to the Grand Prairie Church or to the National Library Service, a free braille and talking book library service for people with temporary or permanent low vision, blindness, or a physical disability that prevents reading or holding the printed page. Memorial envelopes will be available at the funeral home. The Goodwine Funeral Home in Palestine is in charge of the arrangements.
