Norman L. "Norm" McCoy

Norman Leroy "Norm" McCoy passed away peacefully at his home in rural Hutsonville at 11 AM on Friday, September 4, 2026, after a brief battle with cancer.

Norm was born on March 6, 1963. He was the son of Larry and Sharon Frey McCoy. He married Lori Pearce on May 11, 1991. Norm was a graduate of Lincoln High School in Vincennes, IN, in 1981. While in high school, he enlisted in the Army and became a flight medic. He went to Vincennes University while in the Army. He was an EMT for Halter-Smith Ambulance Service in Vincennes and then for the Sullivan County Ambulance Service.

Norm continued his education at Ivy Tech to get his LPN while working at Mary Sherman Hospital in Sullivan, IN. There he met a surgical nurse, Lori Pearce, at the Christmas party. The pair married and lived with Lela in Hutsonville, next to her parents, with the beauty of nature surrounding them at the Harvest Hill Orchard. Then they had a son, Connor to complete their family. While working and becoming a father, Norm went to OCC, earned his RN , and began his career in the ER at Sullivan County Community Hospital in Sullivan, IN. He also worked for Air Evac in Brazil, IN, as a flight nurse before landing at St. Vincent Hospital on 86th St. in Indianapolis, where he spent the last 25 years of his career.

Norm believed in Christ and used his favorite Bible verse in leadership roles at work. He would frequently walk around and quote Isaiah 6:8, "Here am I, send me." Norm advocated using the skills and gifts God gives us in ways that always helped others. He had a calming presence that could calm even the wildest days in the ED. His coworkers would look for the "Norm in the storm." He was a constant educator and would exude confidence to everyone around him and took the time for a teaching moment with each coworker or student, which gave him great joy and satisfaction, especially in the later years of his career

Norm had many hobbies that he enjoyed. Norm was an avid reader, whether it was history or biographies to settle after a long day in the ER, or reading children's books to his grandsons. He loved to build and shoot black powder rifles and muzzleloaders with his dad and friends. He has always had an interest in history and vacationed many times to Gettysburg and other historical sites with his wife Lori and friends. In the last several years, Norm took an interest in participating in Civil War reenacting and living history, making many new friends along the way. Norm also loved to hunt deer with his family, especially during the Illinois shotgun season in November.

Norm had passion and love for many things in his life, but none more than the love for his family. Although he worked in Indy and was away for days at a time, he never missed the special moments to be there for his family. He was the one that you could count on in a time of need. Norm had a way with words, even over the phone, that could make everything seem ok regardless of the circumstances. Norm was the safe place for so many people, and his presence will be dearly missed by many.

Norm is survived by his wife of 35 years, Lori, rural Hutsonville. A son, Connor and Danielle McCoy, rural Hutsonville; three grandsons, Samuel Beau, Noble Ocie, and Walker Val McCoy, rural Hutsonville; a daughter, Lela Rae, Carmel, IN; three brothers, Christopher McCoy, Vincennes, IN, Chuck and Leanna McCoy, Vincennes, IN, Joe and Maria McCoy, Georgetown, KY; a mother-in-law, Chloe Pearce, rural Hutsonville; a brother-in-law, Kevin and Dorie Pearce, Oak Point, TX; MaryAnn McCoy, loving wife of Larry McCoy, Linton, IN; Aunt Beverly McCoy and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Norm is also survived by many friends and fellow first responders/coworkers, whom he considered family.

Preceding Norman in death were his parents, Larry and Sharon McCoy; father-in-law, Tom Pearce; grandson, Bodhi Val McCoy; an uncle, Jack McCoy; and a nephew, CJ McCoy. 

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. (Central Time) on Saturday, September 19th, at the Hutsonville Cemetery, with Chaplain Dana Whitten, MDIV, officiating. The family asks that attendees come dressed casually. Those who have a "Norm's Village" t-shirt are encouraged to wear it. Camo is welcome in honor of his years of hunting, as is reenactment garb for those who knew him on the field.

Norm spent his working life meeting the needs of others when it mattered most, and the family has chosen memorials with this in mind. His emergency department keeps a community closet for patients who arrive with little to nothing to wear, and clothing may be purchased for it directly by clicking this link. Financial memorials may be made to "Helping His Hands Disaster Relief" for their Ramping Up for Jesus ministry, or to the "Arthur and Ruth Browne St. Vincent House", which houses the families of patients who travel a distance for care. Memorial envelopes will be available at the cemetery.
