October 1, 1930 — May 22, 2017

Norvil D. Arnold, Sr, 86, of Flat Rock, IL, died at 8:16 a.m. (EST) on Monday, May 22, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, IN. He was born on October 1, 1930 in Darke County, OH, the son of Calvin C. Arnold & Jetta (Doty) Arnold, both of whom preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Leon Arnold, Calvin Arnold, and Jack Arnold; and by his sisters, Pauline Courtney and Betty Coulter. He married Mamie Courtney on July 10, 1953, and he preceded her in death following 64 years of marriage. He is also survived by his children, Norvil Arnold, Jr. (Robinson, IL), Norvita Legg (Flat Rock, IL), Nora Inboden (Hardinville, IL), and Amy White (Greenup, IL); by 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Norvil was a 1949 graduate of Fort Recovery High School, where he was long-remembered as a yo-yo champion. He went on to serve his country in the U.S. Army, and was stationed in Germany as a company clerk. Back home, he worked for a number of businesses, including New Idea Farm Implements in Cold Water, OH. A few years later, he and Mamie moved to Robinson, where he got on with Tempco and eventually with Marathon, where he worked for 22 years. After retiring in 1990, Norvil stayed very active, having built his own house and surrounding buildings on his property. He was very mechanically-minded, and was always building something. He also spent quite a bit of time on the road, having transported kids to Shriner’s Hospital for Children and also drove for local Amish families for a number of years. All in all, he travelled through 47 states over the course of his life. He will be remembered as a good husband, father, and friend. He was one-of-a-kind and will never be forgotten. Private family services have already been held, and he was buried in the Good Hope Cemetery, rural Flat Rock with military services conducted by the combined units of the Robinson V.F.W. Post #4549, American Legion Post #69, and Marine Corps League Det #546, and the Flat Rock American Legion Post #132. The Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
