Paul Poorman, 80, of Marshall, IL, passed away on April 8, 2026, at Marshall Rehab.
Paul came into the world on January 24, 1946, and grew up in West Union, one of a houseful of brothers and sisters. West Union was the kind of place that shaped Paul into someone who could find contentment with what was right in front of him. He graduated from Marshall High School with the Class of 1964 and not long after, found his way behind the teller window at a number of local banks. The work fit him. He was careful and dependable, and he spent the better part of his working years counting out cash and balancing drawers before finally retiring from First Mid Bank in Marshall.
On November 20, 1970, Paul married Nancy Boyll, and the two of them settled into the quiet, comfortable life Paul had always been built for. He was a homebody through and through. He didn't need much to be happy, just his wife, his home, and a dog underfoot. There were several dogs over the years, and every one of them had it made. Looking after them was one of his simplest and deepest joys.
When he did go out, it was often with a bowling ball in hand. Paul bowled in leagues in both Marshall and Terre Haute, and one unforgettable night in Terre Haute, every pin fell exactly the way it was supposed to. A perfect 300, and he had the ring to prove it! A lover of sport, he was a loyal Illini basketball fan and a Bears fan from way back, especially fond of the years when being a Bears fan was a little easier on the heart.
Retirement gave Paul and Nancy the chance to see places they'd only ever read about. They took trip after trip with Turner Coaches, making it all the way to Alaska and Hawaii, along with plenty of smaller stops in between. For a man so at home in his own living room, those journeys meant a great deal.
Faith was the quiet thread running through it all. Paul was a longtime member of the West Union Christian Church, and his belief, like everything else about him, was unshowy and sincere. He worried about people. He worked hard. He was kind in the ordinary, day-in day-out way that matters most. And on April 8th, the simple, faithful man who had always been most content at home finally went Home for good.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Nancy; his sister, Elizabeth St. John; and several nieces and nephews. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Marion & Areatha (Monk) Poorman; his brothers, Lester Joe Poorman, Marion Dale Poorman (and his wife Carolyn), and Randal Edward Poorman; and his sisters, Phyllis Wampler and Martha Lindley.
A time of visitation will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 13th, at the Prust Hosch Funeral Home in West Union. A celebration of his life will immediately follow at 2:00 p.m. with Celebrant Curt Goodwine officiating. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
