Phil Alan McConnell, 88 of Palestine, IL died at 3:17 p.m. (E.S.T.) Tuesday, August 7, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, IN. He was born March 16, 1924 in Robinson, IL, the son of Herman McConnell and Blanche Churchill McConnell. After graduating Robinson High School in 1942, Phil enlisted and served in the U. S. Air Force during WWII. He was trained as a radio operator and as a gunner, flying many missions over Europe in a number of bombers. He was a rural mail carrier for the U. S. Post Office and retired after 42 years of service. He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, the Robinson V. F. W. Post #4549, the Robinson American Legion Post #69, and the United States Postal Carriers Association.Phil married his wife, Kathryn on August 8, 1982 and she survives in Palestine. He is also survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Kent & Sandy McConnell, (Hobart, Australia), Kevin & Sue McConnell (Robinson); 4 granddaughters, Brooke and her husband, Shawn Knotts, Megan and her husband, Mark Anselment, Hannah McConnell, Amber McConnell; his step-daughter, Paula Earlywine (Indianapolis, IN); 2 sisters-in-law, Lois McConnell, and Pauline and her husband, Ed Outcalt; and 2 nephews, Todd Outcalt and Ty Outcalt.He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Bob McConnell.Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 11th at the Goodwine Funeral Home, Palestine with Todd Outcalt and Jane Drake officiating. Burial will be in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery, rural Palestine. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 10th at the funeral home. Military services will be conducted by the combined units of the Robinson V. F. W. Post #4549, Palestine AmVets Post # 33, Robinson American Legion Post #69, and Flat Rock American Legion Post # 132. Memorials may be made to the Grace United Methodist Church with envelopes available at the funeral home. Memories and condolences may be shared at .
