Rex Mitchell

March 12, 1944 — June 29, 2025

Rex Mitchell, 81, of Palestine, IL, passed away in the comfort of his home on June 29, 2025. Born on March 12, 1944, in Robinson, IL, Rex grew up locally, attending school in Porterville before graduating from Robinson High School. Not long after, he headed north in search of work, eventually finding his footing as a machine operator. But it was behind the wheel of a truck where he found his true calling. Rex was born to drive—passionate about the open road, the hum of the engine, and the freedom that came with both. His career took him all over the country and gave him stories that could stretch from coast to coast.

He lived in a lot of places over the years—Wisconsin, Minnesota, Alabama—but Palestine was always where his roots ran deepest. He had a quiet circle of good friends here, none closer than his neighbor Denver Ferguson, who called Rex “a good neighbor, a better friend.” That friendship was one of many steady points in a life full of twists and turns.

After all, Rex forged his own path, in his own way, and often at his own pace (which, if we’re being honest, wasn’t always patient). He could be strong-willed, sure—but he was also playful, witty, and just ornery enough to keep you on your toes. He loved a good joke. He had a knack for mischief. And he never stopped chasing adventure—even if that meant another long haul down another long highway.

Rex didn’t try to impress anyone—he just lived his life, plain and true. He worked hard, joked often, and cared deeply for the people lucky enough to know him. And in his own quiet way, he made a lasting mark.

Surviving are his daughter, Kim Mitchell-Orsi (Chicago, IL); his grandchildren, Evon Orsi and Hope Orsi (both of Chicago, IL); and his great-grandchildren, Nico and Luca Orsi. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews who will remember him with a smile. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde B. Mitchell & Osa (Henderson) Mitchell; his sisters, Aileen Napp, Donna Lee Miles, Barbara Galey, and June Doolittle; and his brother, Robert Morris.

Per his wishes, Rex will be cremated, and the Goodwine Funeral Home in Palestine is assisting with arrangements. His family will hold a celebration of his life from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 16th, at the Palestine Community Building (216 S Main St, Palestine, IL 62451). All who knew him are welcome to come share a laugh, a story, and a memory—just the way Rex would’ve liked it.
