Richard A. Newlin, 71, West York, IL, died at 2:20 p.m. at his home on Saturday, August 23, 2008 after a battle with cancer.He was born August 27, 1936, the son of Ernest and Nellie (Bohn) Newlin in West York. He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. He then worked as a rural mail carrier for the West York/Hutsonville area for 34 years. He retired in 1992.He was a life member of the American Legion Post #742, Hutsonville; the V.F.W. Post #975, Marshall; the D.A.V. Chapter #63, Olney; and the Marine Corps League Detachment #471, Terre Haute. He was also a 32nd degree member of the York Masonic Lodge #313, West Union; the Eastern Star Chapter #739, Marshall; a member of the Valley of Danville, IL Consistory, Scottish Rites; and the Sword of Bunker Hill, West Union. He served as a past Vice President of the Crawford County Young Democrats, a Hutsonville Township Precinct Committeeman, a 6-year member of the Hutsonville Township Board, and he belonged to the Township Officials of Illinois. He was also a member of the Illinois Rural and National Letter Carriers Associations, National Retired Federal Employees, ATA American Trap Shooting Association, and he was a charter member of the ANR Wood Carving Association. He served as Treasurer of the Bradbury Cemetery since 1982. He was a member of the former Methodist Church of West York, and he attended the First Baptist Church of West Union.He enjoyed painting, wood working, and furniture making, donating many of his works to charity. He was also a devoted member of the Honor Guard-Funeral Detail for the American Legion and V.F.W., serving in 215 military funerals.He married Nancy JoAnna Lindley on April 17, 1959. She preceded him in death in 1994. He was also preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include ex-wife and caregiver, Cassie Pinkston, York; a twin brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Sybil Newlin, West York; a son, Leslie Newlin, Marshall; a son and daughter-in-law, Monte and Angela Newlin, Hutsonville; two daughters, Nancy Michelle Newlin, Charlotte, N.C., and Andrea Newlin, West York; six grandchildren, Hailey, Elliot, Macey, Emma, Eli, and Ethan Newlin; a niece and three nephews, and several great nieces and nephews.Funeral services are Thursday, August 28th at 2:00 p.m. at Prust-Hosch Funeral Home, West Union with Brother Don Russell officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 27th and until service time on Thursday. Masonic services will be conducted by the York Masonic Lodge #313 following visitation at 8:00 p.m. Burial is in the Bradbury Cemetery with graveside military rites by the V.F.W. Post 5975, Marshall and American Legion Post #90, Marshall, and American Legion Post #742, Hutsonville. Memorials may be made to Lincolnland Hospice or Bradbury Cemetery with envelopes available at the funeral home.
