Richard Allen "Dick" Swingley

Richard Allen “Dick” Swingley, 84, of Robinson, IL, died at 5:00 a.m. on Monday, August 22, 2016 at the Lawrence County Memorial Hospital in Lawrenceville, IL. He was born May 16, 1932 in Delaware County, IN, the son of Wilbur “Doc” Swingley & Martha (Fodrea) Swingley, both of whom preceded him in death. Dick was also preceded in death by his wife, Doris (Jackson) Feltt on June 15, 2013; by his brother, Paul Swingley; and by his sister, Mary Pritchard. He is survived by his children, Rodney A. & Kathy Swingley (Naples, FL), Lucinda K. Swingley (Naples, FL), and Sharon L. Burtch (Robinson, IL); by his step-children, Dr. James R. & SanDee Feltt (Vincennes, IN), William E. & Kimberlee Feltt (Charleston, IL); by his grandchildren, Ron & Debbie Hills (Atlanta, GA), Kimberly L. (Feltt) Kellams (Vincennes, IN), Julia & Derek Payne (Bloomington, IN), Ian K. Feltt (Salt Lake City, UT), Jackson L. Feltt (Paris, IL), Trevon A. Burtch (Robinson, IL), Brayden L. Burtch (Robinson, IL), Rodney A. Swingley, Jr. (Naples, FL), Thomas W. Swingley (Naples, FL); his great-grandchildren, Avery G. Stein, James W. Swingley, and Emerson Swingley; by his sister, Linda Bailey; by his brother, Donald Swingley; as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews. Dick served his country in the U.S. Marines for three years, two of which were served overseas, and nine months were served as Asst. Brig Warden at the Norfolk Naval Brig. After being honorably discharged, he became a truck driver for J & K Stone before moving on to Muncie Paving and Chatfield Paper. He was also a plant operator for Irving Concrete and also worked for Warner Gear. He served 13 months as Eaton Town Marshal in Eaton, IN. He went to work for Marathon Oil, driving both tankers and dry freight. It was this job that saw him transferred to Robinson, where he worked for 25 years before retiring in the 1990s. He then became a security guard with Wackenhut Security and was posted at the Ameren plant in Hutsonville before ending his professional career as a truck driver for Illiana Core. Away from work, Dick could often be found spending time with the coffee bunch, fishing, hunting, or watching baseball. He was an avid Saint Louis Cardinals fan and also attended many of his grandsons’ baseball games. Years prior, he was recognized for his bowling prowess and took part in a number of bowling leagues. He also had an interest in upholstery, and considered it a hobby. He will long be remembered as a man who never met a stranger. His sense of humor and warm hugs will forever be missed. A time of visitation will be held from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 30th at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson. Military rites will follow the visitation and will be conducted by the combined Robinson V.F.W. Post #4549, Robinson American Legion Post #69, Flat Rock American Legion Post #132, and Palestine AmVets Post #33. Memorials may be made to the V.F.W. Transportation Fund, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
