Robert Neal Estep, 55, passed away on May 29, 2026, at Crawford Memorial Hospital.
He was born on June 15, 1970, in Sullivan, IN, the son of Robert and Diana (Davis) Estep. Though his life began in Indiana, Neal grew up in Robinson, IL, where he graduated from Robinson High School in 1988.
From there, Neal continued his education at Indiana State University, where he earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees in criminology. That education helped shape the work he would go on to do, serving over the years as a correctional officer in several prisons. Later, he spent four years as a drug and alcohol counselor at HRC in Marshall, IL. Whether working in corrections or counseling, Neal brought with him a steady work ethic, patience, and a genuine desire to help. He was known as a hard worker, but even more than that, he was known as a good one.
On October 29, 1994, Neal married Robbie McDaniel, and together they built a life marked by love, loyalty, and companionship. Neal was loving and kind, the sort of man whose steadiness could be felt by those closest to him. He was patient, dependable, and quietly devoted to the people and creatures who made up his world, including his beloved cat, Chance, and his poodle, Marissa.
Neal had a wide range of interests, and he pursued them with curiosity and enthusiasm. He loved to cook and to eat, especially when good food could be shared with the people he loved. He was an avid reader with a wide variety of books, always eager to learn something new. He enjoyed playing Trivial Pursuit, was a devoted fan of Star Trek and Star Wars, and had a deep interest in computers, family history, and history itself. Neal was a true history buff, drawn to the stories of the past and the ways they helped make sense of the present.
Those who knew Neal will remember his mind, his kindness, his work ethic, and his quiet, faithful presence. He was a husband, brother, uncle, nephew, friend, reader, thinker, animal lover, and student of history. His life was not loud or showy, but it was meaningful, and the people who loved him will carry his memory with gratitude.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Diana Estep.
He is survived by his wife, Robbie Estep; by his brother Perry J. & June Root (Omaha, NE); by two nephews, Perry J. Root II & wife Lexie Root (Colorado Springs, CO) and Terrance J. Root & wife Bethany Root and family (Omaha, NE); as well as his beloved cat, Chance, and poodle, Marissa.
A family-guided visitation will be held from 10:30-11:00 a.m on Saturday, June 20th at the Robinson Free Methodist Church. Funeral service will immediately follow at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at the church, with Pastor Aaron Peternel. Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson is assisting the family with arrangements.
