Roger L. Osborn, a spirited and courageous man whose life journey took him from the fields of Robinson, IL, to the battlegrounds of Vietnam, passed away unexpectedly at Crawford Memorial Hospital in Robinson on December 30, 2023. Born on May 27, 1946, Roger's 77 years on this earth were marked by courage, service, and a commitment to excellence in his trade.
Roger's early life in Robinson set the stage for a man who would not shy away from challenges. Even as a young man, he was known for his ornery streak and love of adventure. This sense of daring led him to make a pivotal decision as a teenager: with his parents' sign-off, he joined the Army and went off to fight in the Vietnam War. As a proud member of "The Big Red One" 1st Infantry Division, Roger served his country with distinction from 1963 to 1966, earning several decorations, including the Vietnam Service Medal, reflecting his courage and commitment.
Following his military service, Roger transitioned to civilian life with that same sense of purpose and dedication. On November 4, 1966, he joined the Terre Haute Local #157 Plumbers and Steamfitters Union and began a long and respected career as a steamfitter. Roger's work took him to numerous locations, reflecting his love for travel and his steadfast commitment to the trade. In addition to his 57-year membership with Local #157, he was also a member of the Robinson VFW Post #4549 and American Legion Post #69.
Roger's interests reflected the complexity of his character. While he retained the ornery spirit of his youth, he also became known for his reserved, quiet demeanor, especially in his later years. Those who knew him best could speak to his stubbornness, a trait that never dimmed, even in the twilight of his life. Though that life is over, we will hold on to our cherished memories of this patriot pipefitter.
He is survived by his children, Kristina Bates and Adam Osborn; by his sister, Loretta Houser; by his step-brothers, Herbert Osborn and Roger Osborn; and by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Estel & Erma (Stevens) Osborn; his brother, Harold Osborn; and his daughter, Katrina Hulfachor.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 5, 2024, at Grand Prairie Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the combined units of the U.S. Army, the Robinson V.F.W. Post #4549, the Robinson American Legion Post #69, and the Flat Rock American Legion Post #132. Celebrant Curt Goodwine will officiate the service, and the Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson is in charge of arrangements.
