Shirley Ann Stephens

Shirley Ann Stephens, 76, of Palestine, IL, died at 8:11 a.m. on Monday, May 2, 2016 in the comfort of her home. She was born October 25, 1939 in Robinson, IL, the daughter of Marion Bowen & Sarah Waldrop Bowen, both of whom preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her step-father, Floyd Cullison; by her father-in-law & mother-in-law, Harold O. & Kathryn Stephens; by her brother-in-law, Glen Stephens; by her aunt, Phyllis Flynn. She married Paul “Pork” Stephens on August 19, 1968, and he survives. She is also survived by her brothers-in-law, Ralph & Millie Stephens (Pierre, SD), Ray & Rita Stephens (Robinson, IL), Kenny Stephens (Annapolis, IL); by her sister-in-law, Nancy & Rolland Hill (Annapolis, IL); by her cousin, Greg Bowen (Robinson, IL); by her step-uncle, Luther “Gene” Cullison (Dugger, IN); by her aunt, Pat & Sam Hill (IN); and by her cousins, Bo Chiappa (Vincennes, IN) and Karen Beabout (Robinson IL); by several nieces and nephews; and by her beloved dog, Misty. She was a 1958 graduate of Palestine High School. She furthered her education later on in life when she received her associate’s degree in mechanical engineering from Lincoln Trail College. She went on to work for Fair-Rite in quality control for over 20 years. In her free time, she enjoyed the outdoors. She had a green thumb, and could often be found gardening. She also enjoyed mowing and hunting mushrooms. Shirley was quite the sharpshooter, and won several shooting competitions over the years. She accompanied Pork to several of his engine shows. They could also be found traveling in their camper, and enjoyed vacationing in Texas. At home, she was infamous for her cooking and for her baking, which will be sorely missed. She will long be remembered for her love of dogs. Her friends have family have lost a beautiful, one-of-a-kind soul. A time of visitation will be held from 4:00-6:00 p.m. on Friday, May 6th at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Palestine. Funeral services will follow the visitation, and will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, with Celebrant Curt Goodwine officiating the service. Cremation will follow and burial will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Oblong Tractor & Engine Club, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
