Steve Vernon Shoulders

Steve Vernon Shoulders, 47 of Flat Rock, IL died Thursday, June 13, 2013 at Carle Hospital in Champaign/Urbana following an accident at home while training a horse, which he was so very passionate about. He was born January 14, 1966 in East Chicago, IN the son of John Leroy Shoulders and Nova 'Ann' Shoulders. Steve lived a very full life and he worked hard every day. He met his wife Sherri (Smith) in high school in 1982, graduated in 1984 from Robinson High School. He and Sherri married May 16, 1987 and have had an awsome life together. After high school Steve continued to work as a farm hand around the Palestine and Robinson areas. In 1993 he started S & S Construction, along with his children, wife, dedicated workers and years of hard work, he created a successful construction business. Steve enjoyed building and working with all types of wood, but he found his greatest joy in riding his horses. Over the past year, Steve had the opportunity to spend more time with his wife, family and friends new and old, and to fulfill some of his dreams; riding in the Grand Canyon and mountains out west; teaching kids to ride horses and to have respect for animals.He 'Lived to ride'. Steve and his wife met so many new people and made several new friendships during that time and they are all considered a part of the family.He is survived by his wife Sherri Shoulders, daughter, Shawna LeAnn 'Shoulders' Roberts, son in law Joshua James Roberts, grandson Maddux Brylie Roberts, daughter, Shelby Diann Shoulders, son, Steven 'Dalton' Shoulders and his mother Nova 'Ann' Shoulders, all of Flat Rock, IL, a sister Christine Shimer and brother in law David Shimer, of Petersburg, IN, brother, John L Shoulders Jr. and Laurie 'Amy' Shoulders of Whiting, IN, sister inlaw Leslie 'Smith' Bailey, brother in law David Bailey of Jarrell Texas, father and mother in law Jerry and Bonnie Smith of Jarrell, TX, eight nieces, Sara 'Shoulders' Sharpe of El Paso, TX, Cindy 'Shimer' Lich of Monroe City, IN, Carrie 'Shimer' Shelton of Winslow, IN, Madilyn 'Baldner' Taylor, Morgan Baldner and McKenzie Baldner all of Flat Rock, IL, Tia 'Bailey' Meronek of Kileen, TX, Shyanne Bailey of Jarrell TX, three nephews David Shimer of Peteresburg, IN, Derek Bailey and Darren Bailey both of Jarrell, TX. He is preceded in death by his infant son Leslie Wayne Shoulders, his father John Leroy Shoulders, his nephew John Joseph Shoulders, his grandparents John and Helen Shoulders, and Vernon and Wilma Dixon. A memorial will be held at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Flat Rock on Friday June 21, 2013 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to the GSH Foundation Welch Diabetes Education Fund with envelopes available at the funeral home.
