William Lee Snyder, 72, of Palestine, IL, died at 9:17 a.m. on Monday, June 29, 2015 in the comfort of his home. He was born November 12, 1942 in his grandparents’ home in Stoy, IL, the son of James William Snyder & Maxine Matthews Snyder. Bill married Sheila Rose Watts on December 29, 1963, and she preceded him in death on June 11, 1974. He then married Virginia M. Woods on March 20, 1975 and she preceded him in death on November 29, 2006. He was also preceded in death by his parents and by his sister, Sara Kay Snyder. He is survived by his children & their spouses, Jill Lynette (Snyder) Christie, Wm. Bradley & Tammy Snyder, Jesse & Christina Snyder, and Amanda Jean & Adam Keith Davis; seven grandchildren, Abbey Mason & Tommy Mason, Matthew Christie & fiance Jessica Cargile, Samantha Rose Snyder Mehler & Logan Mehler, Avery Marae Davis, Adysen Davis, Grace Snyder, and Lyla Snyder; his great-grandchildren, Radlee Lane Mehler, Ruxin Ray Mehler, Rafe Lucas Mehler, Jariah Mason, Kamdyn Christie; his twin brother & sister-in-law, James M. & Eldonna Snyder; as well as several nieces and nephews. Bill graduated from Palestine High School as a member of the Class of 1960. He went on to work for Marathon Oil Company for 35 years in the maintenance department. Away from work, he enjoyed participating in the Boy Scouts and in youth baseball. He was very active in Pioneer Little League, Palestine Babe Ruth, as well as Palestine Boy Scout Pack 333 and Troop 333. He earned several scouting awards over the years, including the Silver Beaver Award, the highest award an adult can receive in the Scouts. He was a member of the Lincoln Trail Council, the Wabash Valley Council, the Crossroads of America Council, the Palestine Masonic Lodge #849 and the Valley of Danville Scottish Rite. He was an Elder Emeritus and Deacon at the 1st Christian Church in Palestine. He will be remembered for his love of children and for the good times he spent with his buddies at the Village Inn in his later years. A time of visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 2nd at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Palestine. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 3rd at the funeral home with Pastor Dennis Steckley to officiate the service. Burial will follow in the Palestine Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Crossroads of America Council of Boy Scouts of America, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
